In The Heart Of Zombie City by The Waterford Landing
In the Heart of Zombie City is the second full length album from Miami based band, The Waterford Landing. You can downloaded it for free at http://thewaterfordlanding.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-heart-of-zombie-city.
It is a concept album that has seamless song integrations that should be heard in it's entirety. I really enjoyed listening to it's story book presentation of a seemingly Zombie infiltration. I can hear many influences from Ride to Super Furry Animals to Eno to many more artist. However, it has a sound all it's own while still being familiar. Recorded really well with great cover art.....it is probably one of the better albums I've heard this year while still being put together independently by the actual Artist's and not a label. I would love to get this on Vinyl or maybe mastered in Surround. Check out the tracks listing below.

Tenderness by Kip Hanrahan, 1990
This week I've decided to highlight the 1990, Kip Hanrahan release on American Clave, Tenderness. Originally, what attracted me to this album was that Sting had sung (or actually spoken) on the track titled, "She Turned So That Maybe A Third Of Her Face Was In This Fuckin' Beautiful Half-Light". However, this album was not what I expected. In fact, if not for the Sting appearance, I probably would have never discovered Kip Hanrahan.Thank God I did!
Kip Hanrahan, for all those that do no know, is an Avant Garde percussionist, who labels himself a producer / conductor/ guy who brings people together. Born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, Kip apparently grew up loving the sounds of Puerto Rican and Cuban Afro music. Tenderness, was a concept album in which Latin Jazz music met metro cosmopolitan Avant Garde society spoken word / first person signing (It's not going to make any sense until you listen to it).
So why would a kid who liked Grunge music, ever listen to some pretension spoken word jazz stuff. Well to be completely truthful.....it appeared at the time very sexy and 20 years later, it is still very sexy music. The spoken word and poetry is very well arraigned as well as the multiple layers of beat driven congas and bongo's. Don Pullen, who is very accomplished pianist, also provides some very skillful Avant Garde Piano work.
This album is very much a necessity to any collection. Unfortunietly, nothing on the American Clave label has been released on vinyl yet but I imagine that it's only a matter of time. According to the record labels web page (http://www.americanclave.com/1-kip.html), Kip has another album due out this year. For a taste of Kip, the website has a music stream of a Hanrahan produced track titled, "In a War Such Things Can Happen." This free music stream can give you a hint of what Kip's music sounds like. This particular song is obviously a protest song, but it is interesting to me, as there are two dueling fret-less bass's throughout the song.

I recently purchased this reissue LP of German Prog-Rock Band, Tips Sum Selbstrmord's 1971 release, Necronomicon, named after the fictitious Magic book from H. P. Lovecraft lore. The vinyl comes in standard weight and color with all liner notes in German.
First Impression: Weird......Second Impression: Weird but kinda cool.
It's like Iron Butterfly meeting early Rush and then performing the sound track to Jesus Christ Superstar II in German. As far a prog-rock....psych-rock, late 60's early 70's stuff, it's pretty mundane. To me there is nothing earth shattering on this one. However, the choir work is outstanding and has a really great haunting vibe, which I assume is due to the recording techniques of the era. Also, the bass playing is interesting to superb. A good listen If you can find it for cheap....However, most record store's are going to try to sell it for more than $20 buck becuase of it's rare nature.
My recommendation: Find a friend who has it or sample some MP3's on the web.

Matthew Sweet, Girl Friend Video...Still awesome
I remember being in my early teen's watching the boob tube (MTV) and seeing Matthew Sweets video for Girl Friend. First of all, the entire album is great and I believe Rolling Stone Magazine named it the best album of the 90's? Either way, I don't even like Japanese Animation but found this to be so clever, exciting and sexy. Such a simple concept but it truly brings the song to life. I suppose the editing has a lot to do with the feel. Either way....enjoy! Also, what the hell has Mathew Sweet be up to lately?

Ambient Score Wins Oscar?
While watching the Oscars last night, I noticed that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame, won the Oscar for best Original Score, for the movie "The Social Network." It should come as no surprise as Trent has been interlacing ambient tracks in all of his albums and has a real knack for capturing a feeling or environment. This particular score is dark and captures the mood of the movie really well. What I find very interesting, is that a modern ambient score, made mainly with synthesizers, beat out several lyrical or orchestral based score offerings. This only goes to show the power of modern Ambient music and it's ability to capture not only our ears but a total encompassing sense of the mood and feel of a particular piece of music or film.
